Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (14–15 oz) can crushed tomatoes (or use whole peeled, crushed by hand)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • Pinch of sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • Optional: fresh basil or parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Sauté the garlic:
Heat olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for 30–60 seconds until fragrant—don’t let it brown.
  2. Add tomatoes and seasoning:
Pour in the crushed tomatoes. Stir in salt, oregano, and the optional sugar.
  3. Simmer:
Lower the heat and let it simmer uncovered for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
  4. Blend (optional for picky eaters):
For a smoother texture, let it cool slightly, then blend using an immersion or standard blender.
  5. Finish (optional):
Stir in chopped basil or parsley just before serving for a fresh touch.

Store Bought Tips

If using store-bought marinara, choose one with simple, wholesome ingredients and no added sugar. To enhance the flavor, sauté a clove of garlic in olive oil, then add the sauce and let it simmer for 5–10 minutes. Stir in dried herbs or fresh basil at the end for a fresh, homemade touch. Blending can also help create a smoother texture, especially for picky eaters.
